Welcome to the Queen Ka‛ahumanu Triathlon Club!
Welcome to the Queen Ka‛ahumanu Triathlon Club!
We’ve organized to help secure the long-term interests of Big Island triathletes and the world class volunteer community that has made Kona synonymous with the sport of triathlon.
Recent decisions by World Triathlon Corporation to repeatedly reduce Big Island participation in our local Ironman race, and then turn what few slots remain into a lottery instead of an athletic competition, concern us all. WTC’s indifference to local triathletes’ opinions, however, has caused us to focus on other areas.
Two other long-term goals — developing events to help local and visiting triathletes organize their training activities, and encouraging young Hawaii residents to develop healthy lifestyles through triathlon — have become our major focus.
To learn more about the Big Island Ironman qualification issue, see our IM Slots page.
Mahalo for visiting!
Mamalahoa Bypass Road STILL closed to training
June 7, 2010 saw the opening of the Mamalahoa Bypass Road to traffic but -- following a couple of days when we could use it to train -- cyclists and pedestrians were prohibited. We enlisted the support of other local groups and interested businesses and wrote jointly to the Mayor about this. After three months, the Mayor’s Office finally responded to the letter. They employed the usual tactics, pointing to the developer, saying it’s not their fault. Meanwhile, one of the safest places to run or cycle on the entire island goes unused, with our own tax dollars maintaining the road and enforcing our exclusion from it.
UPDATE: One year has passed and another is about to, and still the County of Hawaii has done nothing to allow cyclists and runners to use this great venue, even though we’re paying to maintain it and hire off-duty cops to keep us out. The Mayor’s Office continues to pass the buck (stop me if you’ve heard this one before). Wish they cared, but they don’t.
Bike Accident Report Form
On this page and the calendar page you’ll find a link to the Bike Accident Report Form, a statewide effort to develop an information base that can be used to lobby the Legislature and executive branch agencies to develop laws and policies to better protect cyclists. Please use the form if you or someone you know is in an accident involving a motor vehicle.
16 club events on 2012 calendar, plus ‘X’
Last year’s training events are back, along with a Time Trial series. The holdovers are:
• March 25 at 7:30 a.m.: Tri Club10k training run at Old Airport Park.
•May 20 at 7:30 a.m.: 13.1-mile high tempo training run, Old Airport Park.
•June 10 at 7 a.m.: Terrible Twenties (20k & 20 mi. runs). Energy Lab.
•September 23 at 7 a.m.: Run/Bike/Run (3mi/40mi/8mi) at Kua Bay park entrance.
•November 11 at 7:00 a.m.: 10k, 20k & 30k training runs, Old Airport Park.
Meanwhile, Dave and Shirley Pratt will run a monthly cycling time trial event, the first Tuesday of each month. Times vary with daylight so see calendar for exact starting times. Distance will be 5.1 miles, but longer options may be offered after initial TTs. And there is a vicious rumor going around -- remember, you did not hear this from me -- that a TTT may be offered later in the year, so start rotating.
Events remain Absolutely Free, but are now worth at least twice that.
